Attending our Self Build Academy courses, which this couple described as 'Fantastic' and highly recommended for anyone considering a self build, retired banker Bob and his wife Mandy, a retired GP, turned a holiday let into a fantastic self-build project which became their main home.
The couple found a bungalow set on a beautiful 1-acre plot in the Helford Passage area with previous planning permission for a very modern house which seemed out of character for the area. They chose to work with Potton on a new design that suited them and was more in keeping with its surroundings.
Using our ‘Ideas Book’ and working with Sean Adams, the couple started with a design based on our Waterford, B but after a series of modifications they ended up with an almost bespoke design to submit to planning - which passed without any objections.
Work began in March 2018 with the demolition of the existing bungalow. The Potton timber frame followed shortly after, much to the delight of Mandy who after seeing the “pile of debris” commented:
The completed house is finished in chalk white self-coloured render on block and has a clean appearance with pale grey composite windows and doors by Rational and light grey roof slate. The first-floor balcony completes what is a very unique home, which incorporates Vaillant air source heat pump with underfloor heating on both floors.
We thought – what are we doing? But this feeling soon passed...Once the Potton Timber Frame was up, our mood quickly turned positive
