Newham Self Build Case Study

The Newhams have created a beautiful open-plan home in Northamptonshire. Their plot came with outline planning permission and an impressive outdoor swimming pool which the couple were determined to keep.

They first became aware of Potton in self-build magazines and it was at the Potton Show Centre that the Newhams decided Potton was the company for them. They took full advantage of Potton’s comprehensive design and planning service as well as one of the courses from our Self Build Academy.

The Newhams made the decision to project manage the build themselves, and their hard work certainly paid off. Their project went so smoothly that the couple were able to move in the same year; building work began in April 2017 and the Newhams were moved in by that December. They went a little over their £550k budget, but the finished house’s estimated worth of £700k more than makes up for that.

The house is finished with crisp white render and grey roof tiles and accents. A large overhanging gable is the focus of the front elevation, which also features dormer windows and thoughtful landscaping. An air source heat pump, serving both the heating and hot water for the house, makes it comfortable and sustainable.

In the hallway, a wooden staircase leads up to a landing running along the middle of the space, designed to make the area bright and welcoming. The same wooden tones are carried through the rest of the property. A spacious open-plan area dominates the rear of the house, with a living room, dining room and kitchen eventually leading out to the patio and pool area. Exposed posts and beams help to zone the large space. The focal point of the separate living room is the large inglenook fireplace which creates a cosy snug removed from the large open-plan area.
